Incentive Spirometry

The physician might order an incentive spirometer to motivate the client to breath deeply. This device helps to increase lung volume and inflation of the alveoli in the lung. Incentive spirometers also aid venous return. A gauge in the incentive spirometer allows the client to monitor progress and provides immediate positive reinforcement for breathing efforts.
